Tai Chi is often considered to be a means of working out with the aim of better fitness and wellbeing. It is a slow form of martial arts and, as such, has been considered to be more for exercise than actual sparring or self defense. Furthermore, it is considered to be a form that helps calm the mind, more than one that builds martial arts skills.

But is this true?

Yes and no. It is true that Tai Chi is, today, considered more of a routine for physical wellbeing and emotional and mental wellness. However, it is also true that Tai Chi can be an excellent form of martial arts capable of defeating opponents. Furthermore, it is one of the few martial arts forms that allows you to strengthen your energies. This means that you can fight of stress of daily problems as well as the stress of facing off with an opponent equally easily and confidently. This gives you further strength and energy than other martial arts forms such as Kung Fu or Muay Thai. So how can one learn Tai Chi as a form of martial arts and not as just an exercise routine?

It is a long process to be able to do so and involves going from learning Tai Chi basics in its slow form to moving on to learning Tai Chi as a martial arts form. The first thing you need for this is a skilled Tai Chi instructor who has studied the form as both, an exercise routine as well as martial arts. It is even better if this instructor can provide personal guidance because that allows you to proceed at your preferred speed and move ahead as per your convenience.

This is where LocalMasters.com can be a great asset.

While the programs offered by our experts are customized to your requirements, this article will give you an insight into the general progression of lessons that will help you learn Tai Chi as a martial arts form and not just an exercise routine. This involves four stages as follows.

Stage 1: Working on Form

In this stage, you develop your form by learning individual movements and then combining those movements into one fluid motion. You also work on increasing speed as well as learning the basics of Push Hands and incorporating into your form, the 16 Neigong principles. Another aspect of this stage is to understand energies and work on absorbing opponents’ energy to increase your power and reduce theirs.

Stage 2: Push Hands

This stage involves practicing a number of combinations, skills, and combat moves with an opponent. You begin this stage by learning without weapons and move on to incorporating weapons into your practice. In this stage you will progress through the followings steps – Single Push Hands, Double Push Hands, Four Corners Push Hands, and Freestyle Moving Push Hands.

Stage 3: Sparring

Stage 3 is about making the move from Push Hands to actual sparring. This can be done in three ways: one, practice fighting applications with a partner or instructor, two, Circling Hands through which you learn to create and use openings to attack with a Tai Chi hand technique, and three, two person sparring where you and your partner continue to attack and defend to build skill.

Stage 4: Fighting

In this stage, you bring together everything you have learned and apply it to master actual fighting. This stage involves additional steps such as understanding your opponent, working with space and distance, understanding opportunity, and many other techniques and skills that you need to develop to handle an actual fight.
