Some people struggle with their weight throughout their lives. I read a story that covered this very phenomenon on rabbitfoodformybunnyteeth.com. The story speaks about Catherine’s weight loss struggle and how she ended up harming herself with the commonly believed mantra – all or nothing. The story (which can be read here)is a very informative and inspirational read and hence, we simply had to share it with you.

Catherine had struggled with the problem of weight gain from her teenage years. Not realizing how much weight she’d gained, she was forced to face mockery from her peers. Unfortunately, that led her to question herself and her body, and begin to dislike what she saw. She began to believe that ‘fat’ was all she could ever be. As a result, she accepted her fate at a subconscious level and remained unaware of what was adding to her weight or how she could control it.

As a result she continued to put on weight until she’d reached 192 LBS. A look at some photos that she’d clicked on a recent trip with her friends is what really put things into perspective for her. She realized that she’d been eating like a teenager even though she had passed that age. Simply put, her body was not able to handle what, and how much, she ate. And she realized that she could change what she saw.

Inspiration and support came in the form of her father who, that very evening, mentioned that he wanted to try out the Nutrisystem Plan to lose some pounds. Instantly, Catherine chose to join him. Both of them signed up and received their pre-packed meals and meal plan. Catherine managed to stick to her plan even though her father was less successful. Her weight started reducing as she’d hoped. But a new problem arose – she felt lethargic and drained most of the time.

Some routine tests told her that she was absolutely fine, but they also failed to identify the cause of her lethargy. Over time, Catherine realized that the problem may lie in the high preservatives contained in the foods she was eating.

Going off the Nutrisystem Plan was a difficult decision – what if she could not stick to the plan that she had to make herself? Or what if she made it wrong?

But Catherine chose to believe in herself and took the chance. She’d already learned a lot about food groups and how they played into each meal. She delved a lot deeper into that topic by going through health magazines and soon formed her own plan – one that kept her fit and energetic.

By her 22nd birthday, Catherine had come down to 132 LBS. She wore the dress she’d always wanted and felt amazing about how healthy and good she looked in it. But that’s when the problem began.

Catherine became nearly obsessed with her meal plans. One day, she ate one apple more than she had planned for during lunch. That day, she skipped dinner to make up for the additional calories she thought she’d put on. An apple seems like little cause for concern to anyone. But Catherine had fallen into the ‘all or nothing’ trap. She began to skip meals during the day and end up binge eating. Before she realized, her weight came down to 100 LBS. her tail bone hurt simply by sitting and her ribcage became visible.

That was when she realized what she’d been doing wrong. Now, instead of turning her attention to weight loss, she focused on overcoming the ‘all or nothing’ attitude. She began to work on believing that food isn’t an enemy and that an extra apple could not diminish her hard work. Her focus was now on establishing a healthy lifestyle, where exercise, good food, and healthy habits were the norm.

Today, she is happy and healthy. She voices the amazing support her parents and family provided during her difficult journey. She credits them with making her the strong person she is today. Support, according to her, made a lot of things possible.

In fact, it is common to see people fail their endeavors to get healthy not because they don’t know what to do, but simply because they do not have the support that they need. Changing your lifestyle to become healthy is not an easy thing, and every individual needs support on this journey. Personal trainers and dietitians can be the support that you need.
