1. Sit on the floor (or a folded blanket if your hamstrings are very tight) and bend your right knee.

2. Cross the right foot over the knee of your unmitigated left leg.

3. Bring your right hand behind you and cross your left arm over your right knee to twist toward the right.

4. With every inhale, lift your chest to enlarge your spine, and with every exhale, twist a little further. This pose increases the space between the vertebrae, taking pressure off the lower back and increasing mobility in the entire spine.

 

Apanasana This asana helps keep the low back long, often used a counter stretch to backbends and spinal twists, and used as an eliminator of waste, toxins, and tension.

  1. Embark on lying on your back with legs and arms extended long.
  2. Exhale – bring both knees into the chest and clasp your hands around them.
  3. Keep the back flat on the mat and draw the tailbone and sacrum toward the ground to lengthen the spine.
  4. Release the shoulder blades down and broaden across the collarbone.
  5. If comfortable, rock gently from side to side to massage the spine.
