  • Best Age to Begin Taking Piano Lessons

A common question often arises – What is the best age to start taking piano lessons?

In response to that, more questions also trigger like – Have you witnessed your toddler trying to sing along with a song? Do they hum on random piano keys with great interest?

Yes, it’s a unique trait among kids that they love Music. As parents, if you can give your children good musical lesson then it can enrich their lives in many ways. Learning music can teach your children discipline, improve hand-eye coordination, foster intelligence and creativity, and make them happy.

So, what is the right age for playing Piano?

It’s never too late to start learning piano. You can start at any age. However, the earlier you start, you will get more time to practice and improve the skills. Age 6-8 is a great time to start your child’s Piano lessons. By this age, kids pay attention to the instructor.  Their hands are more flexible, their mind can pick up new words and build new connections at ease. At a younger age, kids generally have more time to practice.

You must have seen many videos or heard of children who play Piano fluently at an age of 3, but it does not mean that a child who plays with random Piano keys is ready to be enrolled in formal Piano classes. Always curious and enthusiastic less than 5 years old would not pay attention to the teacher for more than few minutes. This might not be an effective use of your time. You may rather enroll your kid in music appreciation classes where they can foster a love of music, rhythm and self-appreciation. This will lay a good foundation to learn a musical instrument.

    Parameters of Readiness

Most of the kids aged between 5-8 years are ready to learn Piano. Here is checklist which can help you to know if your child is ready:

    1. Size of Hands

Make sure that your child’s hand is big enough to play Piano keys and is also able to easily stretch fingers to play 5 adjacent white keys together.

    2. Finger Mobility

Your child should have control and be able to move individual fingers and not play with one single finger.

    3. Interest and Desire to Learn

The most important requirement is your child’s own interest to learn music. If the motivation comes from you and not from your child then soon it might become a struggle for your child.

    Teenagers and Adults

As said, it is never too late as long as you have a keen desire to learn Piano. Same goes for teenagers and adults. You can always learn a new skill. You will require more patience though. Not everyone learns Piano to become a professional. You may always learn it for your own happiness and hobby.
