Sometimes it can be a hard choice trying to pick out the right teacher for private singing lessons. You want to measure their experience, overall background, and where they can help you improve in terms of your vocal reach and abilities.

So we sat down with Matt Ramsey a seasoned veteran who is currently providing top notch private lessons in the heart of Austin. He provided his expert insights and some of the benefits of taking private lessons with experienced vocal instructors.

Key:

(LM) = Local Masters

(MR) = Matt Ramsey

(LM) How long have you been a professional vocal instructor?

(MR) I have been teaching singing lessons for the last 7 years. I became a certified voice teacher with the Institute for Vocal Advancement in 2013.

(LM) What first got you into singing and being a vocal coach?

(MR) Singing has always been a creative outlet for me. During high school, I was always shocked when friends would ask me to sing for their bands. It wasn’t until I started taking voice lessons seriously that I decided to try teaching voice. That’s when I realized I absolutely loved it.

(LM) What benefits do you see from taking private singing lessons?

(MR) Private singing lessons are the best way of improving your voice. Private lessons with an experienced voice teacher will help you improve your pitch, tone, and hit high notes with more power.

(LM) Is taking private lessons necessary if you want to become a professional singer?

(MR) While there are many incredibly talented singers that never took a voice lesson, you’ll find that nearly every professional singer takes regular voice lessons. Between the demands of touring and making an album, taking singing lessons is totally necessary for the professional singer.

(LM) Who first inspired you to sing?

(MR) My parents encouraged my musical talents from a young age. I had my first choir solo at 7 and I’ve been hooked ever since.

(LM) Do you have any simple tips or tricks to improve your singing abilities at home?

(MR) Stop “reaching” for that high note. Rather than trying to belt your way up to a high pitch, try some simple lip trills to hit the note. Then take the same relaxed feeling you get from the trill and put it on the song.

Find a healthy volume for your singing voice. Imagine yourself on a stage and sing at a volume where you could reach the back row without yelling and without whispering.

Practice in front of a mirror. If you see any signs of tension in your throat or on your face, you’re doing something wrong.

(LM) Who are some of your favorite artists today?

(MR) There are so many amazing artists to listen to today. And there’s a lot of competition for who can sing the highest.

Here are some artists that sing those high notes with good technique:

Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, James Arthur, Lady Gaga, Sara Bareilles, P!nk, Beyonce.

(LM) When do you know that you should start taking private singing lessons?

(MR) Most singers find a vocal coach when they’re about to sing in a big performance or audition. This is a HUGE mistake! Instead, start taking singing lessons when you have the time to build and develop confidence in your voice. That way you will be able to see what you’re truly capable of, rather than just cramming for a performance.

(LM) Why is it important to properly learn from a professional instructor early on in your singing career?

(MR) Like with anything, you get what you pay for. There are tons of teachers with a broad range of experience and technique. So when you’re first getting started with singing lessons, look for a voice teacher with the right qualifications for your needs. This will save you time and money in the long run. But more importantly, working with a professional voice teacher will get you singing better more quickly.

(LM) Do you have any inspiring messages for people who want to become professional singers and artists?

(MR) The artists that really make it all have one thing in common: they made a commitment to themselves to become great at what they do. No one stumbles into rock stardom. The truth is that it takes hard work and determination. So if your desire is to become a famous performer, commit to being the best singer you can be and the hard work will seem easier.
