The English language consists of many things including grammar, vowels, symbols that play a significant role in grasping the language traits and tricks. Just like apostrophes are way too important for making any sentence/ word a good read.

Since apostrophes are one of the most used punctuation symbols that everyone uses consistently without fail especially in writing. The use of ‘s’ perfectly makes the sentence look more authoritative for the person who has the possession over something. However, the most thinkable part is whether we are using or placing the apostrophes correctly.

In the English accent reduction classes, there are a couple of things that need attention in terms of differentiation and how the meanings change with a single symbol. It is mostly seen that the use of apostrophe differs from one language to another.

You wouldn’t conceptualize that a small piece of punctuation like the apostrophe would be competent in creating confusion in the sentences/ words.

Why use an apostrophe?

Apostrophes are used in the sentences in order to show when something belongs to someone. To create an exclusiveness in the word/ sentence, the apostrophes are used.

For example:

If somebody asks you – is it your pen? You could reply – No. It’s Kerin’s pen.
Hence, the statement shows possession of Kerin over the pen as she is the owner of that pen.

There are a few more examples where the apostrophes could be used.

Apostrophes can also be used to take the place of missing letters when you shorten a word or phrase. Think about commonly used negatives – in these cases, the ‘o’ in ‘not’ is replaced with an apostrophe:

Do not – Do not pick the unwanted things from the wardrobe.

Don’t – Don’t use abusive language in front of children.

They’re – They are looking for the car.

Their – Their work is pending for the day.

Its – It has stopped raining outside.

It’s – It is Tom’s book lying on the shelf.

There are many punctuation concepts involved in American accent reduction, that helps to let you understand how ‘-s’ becomes imperative to make the concept simpler and clearer.

  • This is Sara’s cup
  • These are my children’s toys
  • There is rick’s shoes lying in the storeroom
  • He is the country’s leader

These minor, under-using or overusing flaws of using the apostrophe in words create confusion sometimes. So, putting apostrophe ‘s’ at appropriate places becomes necessary to clarify the confusions and that surely leaves a positive impact on the readers.
